Erected in 1208 upon a sandstone cliff, it owes its present appearance to XIV-century building work. A strategic stronghold for the defence of the Ceno Valley, it represents one of the best examples of defensive architecture. The castle stands out from other castles of the period in the Parma area: three of the four towers are aligned along the side that faces in the direction of Ceno, while the keep is positioned on the northern edge that faces towards the road. In addition the entrance is located in the central tower of the three aligned towers, but on one side of it rather than on the facade. The manor is open to the public after it was recently acquired by the local administration of Varano de' Melegari.
For groups of at least 15 people it is possible to book a guided tour on any day of the week by contacting Fantasia S.C.S.
Entrance is free for one tour leader or teacher for every 15 people.
External garden, internal courtyard, rooms on the noble floor, hall and staircase of honour, parapet walk, prison of the Bentivoglio, castle kitchens. The guided tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.
