The castle is a rare example of both the art of medieval fortification and the social life of the times. The high keep is surrounded by what was known as the borgo (or burg, a fortified town), it too enclosed within the walled perimeter, consisting of the dwellings of its peasants and craftsmen. Inside is a series of large halls, some vaulted and others with lacunar ceilings, small lounges and bedrooms, all of them furnished with period furniture. The Rocchetta, situated in the north side of the castle, was the seat of the military garrison and prisons, and once adjoined the main building and fortified redoubt, now the premises of the Town Hall. The building, which today is the property of Maria Luisa Zanardi Landi, consists of two floors and a large cellar, and is flanked by a small watchtower. During the last century it was turned into a country residence, with the large vaulted halls and lacunar ceilings of its main body being restored.
