Embedded in the rock, standing guard over the valleys of the Tidone and Chiarone streams and dominating the surrounding hills which are rich with fine vineyards, it is one of the oldest and most striking fortresses in the Piacenza area. Encircled by six rows of walls, it was built sometime around the year 1000. In 1378, after several different owners, Gian Galeazzo Visconti handed it over to Jacopo Dal Verme, the courageous victor of the Battle of Alessandria against Florence. The fortress, which also offers elegant rooms for overnight stays, is built on an irregular plan. Access can only be gained from the northern end, via a steep road which offers a panoramic view. The keep is divided into several communicating rooms which conclude with a small 16th century open gallery.
